Originating in Austria from a crossing of Blaufrankisch, known for its bite, and St Laurent, known for its body. Zweigelt is the third most widely planted red grape variety in the Czech Republic, where it is called Zweigeltrebe. A dry, medium-body red wine showing a touch more richness and intensity than pinot noir.

Colour: Vibrant Ruby with a purple/pink hue.

Aroma: Concentrated wild berries, Amarena cherries, violet and pomegranate. Underlying layer of Salami, fennel seed and tar.

Palate: Juicy with a good concentration of plum, cherry and raspberry flavours. Medium tannins and cacao powder texture support and balance the fruit. The finish is long, spicy and refreshing.

Grapes: 100% Zweigelt grown on our estate in Northern Tasmania

Winemaking: Our Zweigelt grapes were hand-picked in late March 2022 and cold-soaked prior to fermentation to extract colour, aroma and flavour compounds. The Alcoholic Fermentation took place thereafter, with regular plunging of the cap to promote further extraction and structure. The grapes were then gently pressed, settled and racked into seven Very Tight Grain French Oak barriques – we used older oak as we did not want to impart oaky flavours but rather retain a fruit forward style with just a hint of spice and increased concentration from aging in oak. The wine completed 100% Malolactic Fermentation in barrels and was left on fine lees with no racking for 10 months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Cellaring: Up to 5 years.

Serving: We recommend decanting the wine for at least 1 hour before drinking. Aerating the wine will reward consumers with better aromatics and expression. It tastes great slightly chilled as an accompaniment for a summer BBQ or picnic, alongside burgers, sausages and steak. It will also handle nicely richer dishes like beef bourguignons or roast duck.

Technical: Alc. 12.3%, pH 3.52, TA 6.47g/L
